There's no telling what a pair of attractive single love-seekers might do in a darkened room when they're left to their own devices.

Unless you're filming them with night vision technology, that is.

The new Foxtel love quest show Dating In The Dark gives viewers the inside scoop on what goes on between two people when they let their barriers down - the good, the bad and the eyeball licking. (Yes, that's right. Eyeball licking).

Host Laura Dundovic explains the premise of the show is to remove people's looks from the equation as a group of three men and three women who have been profiled to have similar interests and attitudes start dating in a pitch black room.

"It take the whole looks thing out of dating, for the most part," the 2008 Miss Australia tells AAP on set at Whale Beach, on Sydney's northern beaches.

"Attraction is not so much about looks as it's about chemistry - that might be someone's charisma or the energy they give off, not necessarily about how they look.

"What makes it different to other dating shows is that you're able to absolutely isolate personality."

Well, personality and a fair bit of hanky panky.

As well as a fair bit of smooching going on inside the date room, there's been some eye-opening new moves on display.

When on one date feeding each other strawberries turned into finger sucking and then discussions about toe sucking, Dundovic thought she had heard it all.

"Then the guy added that he had heard of people who had licked each other's eyeballs. So they did," she says.

"I couldn't leave the room. We thought the finger sucking was disgusting, but when we heard about the eyeball licking we thought that were going too far."

On Dating In the Dark, first the six contestants go on a group date, then pair off as they assess each other's characters and, in most cases, get up close and personal in the dark.

Then comes the terrifying ordeal of the light reveal, which is enough to make even the most-hardened dater break out in a cold sweat.

In turn, a light is shone on each contestant for their prospective partner to be given a final appraisal before they decide whether they're going to date them or not.

The idea of the show is not to match "a Shrek with a glamazon", but of course not all the light reveals go to plan, with one or other partner not being impressed with what they see, Dundovic says.

"On one episode we had there was a girl who had never had a boyfriend before and she was quite clueless with dating - the other girls even did her hair and make-up and her nails for the final light reveal," she says.

"She really connected with this guy in the dark room and said no matter what happens when we see each other in the light, we're going to get together because we've had this great bond.

"It came to the big light reveal and he saw her and didn't like her, he waited on the balcony and he walked out the door.

"But he was absolutely howling - he was sobbing because he felt so bad."

Dundovic describes the show as a social experiment - but admits the experiment is as much about dating as it is showing up people's shallowness.

"Doing the show you really see there are so many different types of people - some who really just focus on looks and then some who are looking for something deeper.

"Watching the dates, you can see how self-centred some people are, how egotistical people are and I think that it does put a mirror in front of the people."

If someone pulls out of the blossoming relationship after the light reveal, it often says more about them than it does the person they left standing on the balcony waiting, she explains.

"The person who is left on the balcony are is rarely distraught and feeling `Oh my god that was the love of my life'," she says.

"But the person who's leaving has this really heavy guilt because they realise they might have led the person on or not given it a chance because of how they look."

So, who would sign up for the possible humiliation of being dumped for their looks?

Adele Baker said she was sick of attracting the wrong guys and ending up with her heart broken.

The stunning blonde cancer research scientist says she loved the idea of being matched up with someone deemed better suited.

"Obviously whatever I'm doing's wrong," the bubbly 26-year-old laughs.

"I've had my heart broken three times by great loves and at the end of the day it's, like, how many more of these do I have to endure?

"This appealed to me because it's based on your personality, nothing else.

"And they've done all the hard yards, all the hard work, to match me with someone compatible."

Baker describes the light reveal as the "scariest thing I've ever done", but she needn't be worried.

Her pick - Sydney financier Ben Hill, also 26, - is pretty certain he'll be picking her too.

Hill has kissed two of the girls in the house, but explains it's all in the name of research.

"The situation is conducive to the touchy feely side. I didn't want to make the move so quick really, but it's a bit hard not to," Hill says.

"I kissed both the girls - that's not just because I wanted a kiss, but the kiss is fairly important and they both had good kisses.

"I am hoping I reciprocated there as well," he adds, laughing nervously.

Dundovic says when it works, the burgeoning romances - like Baker and Hill's - can leave you feeling "warm and fuzzy".

But if contestants thought they were going to get away without confronting the dates they stood up, they've got another think coming.

"It's a long cab trip from here to the airport," she laughs.
