Siberian Women Battle Against Alcoholics

Wife of Alexander Shatalov fears that if he is as he is, he may not live to 50.
"Come on sister, I drank more than you have lived. I'm drunk, since I was 5 years old and I'm 44 now," says Shatalov.
So, in steps the Council of local women. 19-member Council say they are with each vodka-drinker in this area - and there are nearly 1.000 alcoholics in their list.
"We have received many complaints about men drinking heavily. We've seen families destroyed by alcohol. Thus, we have established this Council, and we are working with the authorities to take action," said Maria Khoklova, head of the Council of Women.
They gave the local government funds for treatment for alcohol abuse.
"We are doing everything possible to put these people through a detoxification program and give them a medication that reduces craving for alcohol. But the treatment is effective only if patients are willing to change their lifestyle," says Anna Felisova, medical advice women.
Alcoholism is a deeply rooted problem in remote Russian villages. Vodka is partly to blame for the rising mortality rate, and Russia's dwindling population.
But many men want to quit - they just need the tools and support for this.
While the Council of Women has 60 success stories.
Alexander Stashkov recently received treatment and is now in remission.
"They talked to me as a person. They convinced me to be treated and a small miracle happened. Now I have no desire to drink." Life is better now that I look at it through different eyes, "says Alexander Stashkov, a recovering alcoholic.
Encouraged by the success, the Council continues to battle Dr. Anna knocks on the door of known alcoholics.
Sometimes Alexander Shatalov takes note and sobers up. Now he is back on the booze.
